Healthcare is meant to heal—but our systems also have an environmental footprint that affects the very communities we serve.
The good news? Many of the solutions that make healthcare more sustainable also improve efficiency, reduce costs, strengthen resilience, and enhance patient care.
As Course Director for the Sustainable Health Systems certificate in the University of Colorado's Diploma in Climate Medicine, I teach healthcare professionals how to turn sustainability into action. Through real-world case studies, interactive workshops, and practical tools, participants learn how to identify opportunities for change, build compelling business cases, and lead sustainability initiatives within their own organizations.
Together, we'll dive into topics including:
Sustainable Quality Improvement opportunities
Greenhouse gas accounting and healthcare decarbonization
Sustainable procurement and supply chain strategies
Circular healthcare and waste reduction
Life cycle assessment for healthcare products and services
Pharmaceuticals and planetary health
Climate-informed healthcare policy
Proven best practices from leading health systems
Practical strategies for pitching sustainability initiatives to organizational leadership
The course is designed for clinicians, healthcare leaders, educators, administrators, and anyone interested in helping shape the future of healthcare. Whether you're just getting started or already leading sustainability efforts, you'll leave with practical knowledge, actionable tools, and the confidence to drive meaningful change.
Your course experience will feature:
40+ hours of CME supported by the Wilderness Medicine Society upon completion and a certificate of completion from the University of Colorado Climate and Health Program
3 days of live, virtual sessions by leading industry experts

…and most importantly, you’ll gain access to a network of like-minded peers who share your passion for change.
